What is Pilates & Why Do I Need It?

Although you may have a particular image in your head of who practices Pilates, the truth is that Pilates could benefit every single person on our planet. Why is that? Pilates exercises strengthen our bodies from the deepest layers all the way to the most superficial muscles, creating stability for your bones and joints, hydrating your fascia for flexibility, and establishing proper movement patterns that can prevent injury and keep us standing taller.

Joseph Pilates (or Uncle Joe as many in the industry call him) first established the exercise regimen he called Contrology in the early 1900s. Throughout his lifetime he worked with an array of clientele from rigging hospital equipment to train those who could not walk to conditioning the world’s most spectacular dancers and performers. Pilates’ method creates an environment for the mind, body, and spirit to all work as one to develop healthful habits.

“Contrology is not a system of haphazard exercises designed to produce only bulging muscles.” It is an exercise and breathing regime that “develops the body uniformly, corrects posture, restores vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.” - Joseph Pilates

Mind body connection is something that is often talked about in Pilates and other forms of movement such as yoga. This connection helps muscles move more efficiently and ultimately work better. Body and mind working in unison will not only create a better physique, but will promote self confidence, stress reduction, and overall happiness.

Having control over how your body moves may not be the first thing you look for in a physical fitness and wellness plan unless you’ve suffered from things like sports injuries or chronic pain. Many people find Pilates as a solution to these things by recommendation of a physical therapist or practitioner, but the great news is that Pilates can be used even before those situations to prevent injury and create functional, healthy movement patterns in your body.

In addition to functional, necessary benefits of Pilates, this form of fitness also leaves its practitioners with gorgeous physiques and a long lean look often referred to as the “Pilates body”! Look fabulous and have a blast doing it  🍑

“You will feel better in ten sessions, look better in twenty sessions, and have a completely new body in thirty sessions.” - Joseph Pilates
